Social Networks at UCI: Additional Information
One of the goals of network analysis is to derive global
emergent structures from local interactions among individuals. Observing
and predicting the results of these interactions may require observational
and experimental measurements, formal methods, computer simulations, and
mathematical models.
ADMISSION:
The graduate concentration in Social Networks seeks qualified graduate
students who are well-trained in either (a) a structural approach in some
traditional social science discipline or (b) mathematics. Students should
be willing to learn the appropriate mathematical, computer, or formal skills
to do research in social networks.
DEADLINE for Fall 1998 admission is January 15.

CURRICULUM AND REQUIREMENTS:
Students are encouraged to develop their own research foci and specializations
within the general social networks perspective. All students are expected
to become acquainted with the general perspective and to develop an appropriate
set of formal and methodological skills.
The following core courses or equivalent training are required:
Analysis of Relational Data, Interaction Models, and Network Theories
of Social Structure. In addition, students are required to complete
one year of training (or the equivalent) in mathematics, statistics, and
research methodology. Selection of other courses will be by agreement between
student and advisor. Students must also demonstrate proficiency in reading
social science publications in one foreign language.

INTERDISCIPLINARY RESOURCES:
The University of California, Irvine (UCI) has a tradition of interdisciplinary
scholarship, and students in Social Networks have access to a wide variety
of interdisciplinary research activities on campus. The Departments of
Anthropology and Sociology administer a joint Program in Social Relations.
UCI also offers complementary programs in Human Development and Health
Psychology in the School of Social Ecology.
The Social Networks faculty is closely involved with the International
Sunbelt Conference, the journal, Social Networks, and the International
Network for Social Network Analysis (INSNA), encouraging international
faculty/student contact, participation, and exchange.
